About Wailuku Guesthouse: Meet the Crew

Maureen is the heart of Wailuku Guesthouse, the one who brought it to life. Since 2000, she has been welcoming guests and shaping the warm, easygoing place it is today. She’s often the first voice guests hear, setting the tone from the very beginning. What started as her vision has grown over time, alongside her family, into a thoughtfully cared-for space where guests come to slow down, feel at home, and experience Maui like a local.

She’s behind the little details people remember… her perfectly kept garden, thoughtful recommendations, conversations that turn into connections, and her famous banana and seasonal fruit breads, often made with what’s fresh from the garden, like banana papaya walnut. Hospitality, for her, has never been about formality. A little rough around the edges is more than okay, because what matters most is that guests feel comfortable, cared for, and genuinely welcomed.

Originally from Chicago, with strong ties to Long Beach, California, Maureen brings a natural sense of warmth and connection to the guesthouse. When she’s not around, she’s often at Keawekapu Beach with family and friends, enjoying the slower pace of life that Maui offers. Close by, her go-to is Cafe O’Lei in Kihei, where you might catch her at happy hour or enjoying dinner. She’s always happy to share her favorite local spots… just ask.

Her love for animals is a big part of the guesthouse charm, earning it the nickname “South Market Zoo.” Over the years, she’s cared for dogs, cats, fish, and birds, always adding to the welcoming, lived-in feel of the space. These days, the crew includes her two miniature Australian Shepherds, Austin and Duffey, Hana the Mexican red-headed parrot, and our newest addition, Kitty Kitty… though guests tend to rename him as they please. He answers to just about anything, especially Mr. Handsome.

If you’ve stayed with us, you’ve undoubtedly already met her. And if you haven’t, you most certainly will.

Maureen: Founder

Declan was born and raised at Wailuku Guesthouse, growing up alongside the space his mom continues to cultivate to this day. From an early age, helping guests find their rooms and working around the property, he developed a natural appreciation for hospitality and the human connections that come with it.

When he’s home on Maui, you’ll often find him out in the yard or on a roof… working as the unofficial handyman and go-to for just about any project that comes up. From building fences and handling electrical to cleaning roofs and gutters, Declan is always finding ways to improve and care for the property in his own hands-on way.

His approach is simple… remove friction wherever possible. The less guests have to think about logistics, the more they can settle in and enjoy Maui.

When he’s not working on the guesthouse, Declan now lives in Utah where he enjoys working in restaurants, hiking with his German Shepherd, skiing, or chasing his next great meal or glass of wine. With a background in wine and hospitality, he’s always happy to share recommendations… on Maui or anywhere else.

He’s proud to be part of what his mom started, and even more proud to help carry it forward.
